Discover the tomb of Châteaubriand in Saint-Malo
The author of Mémoires d’outre-tombe is buried on the island of Grand Bé, at the foot of the ramparts of Saint-Malo, facing the sea. François-René de Chateaubriand, deeply attached to his hometown, had expressed his wish as early as 1828 to be buried on this wild island, 400 meters from the corsair city.
The 90 km separating the Best Western Le Duguesclin in Saint-Brieuc and Saint-Malo are worth the journey to discover the tomb of the famous writer, buried facing the sea.
Since 1848, the grave of the writer, a native of Saint-Malo, plain and unmarked, has been surmounted by a large granite cross facing the ocean, in accordance with his wishes. A commemorative plaque pays tribute to his memory: "A great French writer wished to rest here, to hear only the sea and the wind. Passers-by respect his last wish."
The tone is set: this place invites contemplation, meditation, and poetry!
But beyond the literary thrill, the walk to Grand Bé is an opportunity to enjoy a magnificent view of the Bay of Saint-Malo.
You'll also have breathtaking views of neighboring islands like Petit Bé, and the corsair city itself.
Remember to check the tide times: the islet is only accessible at low tide. Don't venture there if the water is close to the rocks.
Back at the Best Western Le Duguesclin, treat yourself to a gourmet break at the restaurant La Taverne, to discover another side of Brittany!
